Bordeaux is a port city on the Garonne River in the Gironde department in southwestern France and is the 5th largest city in France. A frequent stage start and finish town for the Tour de France, it was first featured in the inaugural race in 1903 and it has been a regular stage stop many times since. Being in France’s most prominent wine region, it is both the center of a major wine-growing and wine-producing region hosting the world’s most renowned estates. It is home to the world’s main wine fair, Vinexpo, and the wine economy in the metro area takes in €14.5 billion ($16.3 billion) each year. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century.
