The Col de Colombiere is a mountain pass road in the French Alps located south and east of Geneva and close to the border with Switzerland. It connects the city of Sciozier to the north with the city of Le Grand Bornand to the south. Starting from Scionzier, the climb is 16.3 km (10.1 miles) long with an average gradient of 6.8%. From Le Grand Bornand, the climb is 11.7 km (7.2 miles) long with an average gradient of 5.9%. THe Colombiere was first climbed in the Tour de France in 1960 and has been climbed regularly since then. The route of the Tour de France often takes riders over the Colombiere from the city of Cluses to the north via the Col du Romme which is 24.8 km (15.4 miles) in length and is the most challenging approach to the col.
